After and before. This race head was damaged by piston and valve contact. We've cleaned it up and welded the damage. The next step is to machine the combustion chamber back to where we want it. Stay tuned.

The owner of this bike came on Saturday and took some pictures with his vintage (1960's) film camera. Here's one of the pictures fresh from the darkroom. That's me on the bike, of course. This picture took 5 or so minutes to set up and take! Besides the obviously amazing subject matter, I think the photograph turned out amazing. The beauty of the bike really jumps out. Kind of a cool, slow experience in an age of instance gratification.

I keep this flag and picture on my wall and I'm lucky I get to see it every day. It reminds me what an amazing person my son is and also of the countless other soldiers past and present who have kept the lights on for the rest of us, generation after generation. Cranson is currently enduring the discomfort of deployment while we all go about our days. I'm damn proud of you son. Here's an interesting project. An R45. I don't think many of these came to North America. Have you ever seen one?

It's head season! Not that kind, you pervert. . Here we have three sets of heads on their way to being done this week. All are going to be fully rebuilt including new guides, valves, and springs. Two of the sets are also getting new seats. All of this work is done right here in house and each set is blue printed to ensure better than new condition.

Whenever I install a VAPE system in a slash 2 I swear a lot and say things like: "Dear God!", "What were they thinking?!!", "Holy sh*t, the instructions are f*cked", and "I'm never doing this again ". But alas this is a necessary evil if we want to upgrade the charging and ignition system on a BMW made before 1970. Someday I'll find the time to rewrite the instructions, redesign all the shitty mounting arrangements and make the wiring diagram human readable, but until then we must forge ahead.

Took advantage of the good weather last night and blasted this R100RS around the back country for some break in after a top end rebuild.

I'm on a bit of a whirlwind trip to Amsterdam and Antwerp. Sadly it's not a riding trip. But....any airhead shops around here I should visit??

It's cylinder head season!! If you want your heads to look and perform like new start thinking about sending them in for a winter refurbishment. . This set is from an 82 R100RS just in for pre-storage deep service. #r100rs

Yesterday I forgot to add this picture of the ignition advance unit. Here you can see how the flyweights attach.

While rebuilding a bean can I found the strangest thing. On the right is one of the flyweights from that bean can. On the left is a flyweight from a different bean can. As you can see the one on the right is missing a piece of the plastic part on the pivoting end. This plastic pad actually has a purpose so I replaced both flyweights with another spare set I had on hand. . What's the purpose? As the flyweights expand outward with rpm, those plastic pads push on the 'feet' of the central shaft that carries the ignition rotor. This rotation is what changes the timing automatically while you ride. With just one flyweight pushing the ignition curve would probably have been a bit lazy and may not have gotten to full advance at all. Anyway, all fixed now.

Spot the problem.

During a routine checkup, I found this cracked coil on a late model RT. The dreaded grey coil! It has now been replaced with the upgraded black coil. Phew.

Gordon dropped off his 73 R75/5 for a deeeeeep winter service. Lovely bike but it needs significant maintenance so it will live here for a while.

Cooking up cylinder head rebuild. It's always fun to discover little things. In this case I found a police (authorities) spec exhaust valve installed. The owner has had the bike since almost new and he says the heads have never been off, so maybe it came from the factory like this?? The bike is an 83 R100RS. . You can visibly see the difference in the valve stems.

This R100RS sump is surprisingly very clean! Just needs a new gasket.
